Top 5 2014: New Music Artists

Every day up to and including New Years Eve I’m posting a new vlog/blog talking about my favourite things of 2014. So, continuing in said fashion, today I’m rating musical artists.

It would be pretty hard to pick the best artists this year because, well, who didn’t produce music this year? We’ve had everyone from Kylie Minogue to The Arctic Monkeys, Shakira to Slipknot and Jessie J to Foster The People. So I’m narrowing it down to new artists. I’m sure these people have all been making music for many years, but I’m focusing on the ones who have really exploded on to the scene this year.

5. Meghan Trainor

So far I only know two of her songs, but I feel that Trainor has a lot of potential for 2015. She has a strong, confident character teamed with fast, flowing beats and bright, colourful videos – no wonder she rocketed up the charts internationally with “All About That Bass“. My only hopes are that we see something different from her next year and she doesn’t refer to slim women as “skinny bitches” again. Meanwhile, keep up the sass, girl!

4. Clean Bandit

I first noticed these guys in 2013, when I heard a song of theirs called “Dust Clears” which I fell in love with, but they didn’t hit the “mainstream” until 2014- achieving their first number 1 in January with “Rather Be” featuring Jess Glynn. I love them for their fusion of sounds from classical to electro-pop; It’s different to anything I’ve ever heard before.

3. Jess Glynne

Clean Bandits’ companion this year, Jess Glynne, is a brilliant singer/songwriter in her own right. She’s perfect for dance-pop and house, and that genre of music is hot this year so, that’s why she deserves 3rd place on this list. Glynne has an album out in in 2015, and I reckon it could do pretty well.

2. George Ezra

George Ezra has an incredible voice (it’s so deep)! He achieved this by attempting to sing in the style of Lead Belly, and he succeeded. I think his big voice, talented guitar playing and interesting music videos have rounded him into a very striking and respectable artist.

1. Kiesza

Kiesza’s music has been massive this year, ever since “Hideaway” reached number 1 (UK Chart) in April. The video, for which, is awesome and I always wonder how they filmed it so excellently. I think she is a very talented woman (take note of her fast-pace dancing which features in 3/4 her videos so far), and I personally would say she’s the best newcomer to the industry this year! If you need proof that she can really sing, check out this cover.

I would have said London Grammar, Iggy Azalea, Foxes, Ella Eyre and Sam Smith because they’ve all had fantastic years, but I feel like they were the new talent of 2013 rather than 2014.
